IPA Voyage

Date: Tuesday, February 9, 2010
Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: England (K&D Liquors) and India (Pakwan Indian Restaurant)
Street: 16th St at Guerrero St
City/Town: San Francisco, CA

In honor of San Francisco Beer Week, join MateVeza on February 9th as we celebrate the true origin of one of history’s most revered beverages - the India Pale Ale.

India Pale Ales evolved from English Pale Ales during the 18th century. English traders and soldiers traveling to India needed a heartier Pale Ale to withstand the long journey to India, so they increased the hops and the alcohol. They figured that they could just add water once it got there, but once they tasted their new burly brew, there was no going back.

Join us in reenacting the original voyage of India Pale Ale as we embark from K&D Liquors (England) across 16th St (the Atlantic / Indian Ocean) to Pakwan Indian Restaurant (India). Arrive at K&D Liquors (3177 16th Street) to purchase a specially priced MateVeza IPA. Then join fellow shipmates for a ferry across the treacherous seas of 16th Street. Pakwan is BYOB so you can celebrate your scurvy-free journey by cracking open a MateVeza IPA to enjoy with your Indian feast (it pairs amazingly well with Indian food).

And don’t worry - we won’t make you add water to your beer when you get there.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - MateVeza has released Yerba Mate IPA, an organic, naturally caffeinated India Pale Ale brewed with yerba mate, source of the South American herbal tea. The much anticipated follow up to MateVeza’s award-winning initial release, Yerba Mate Gold, MateVeza’s newest offering combines yerba mate’s earthy, herbal tones with bright hop flavor and aroma from Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe hops.

The MateVeza line of organic craft beers is brewed with yerba mate, contributing both a unique flavor and a natural source of caffeine. The yerba mate in MateVeza’s new organic IPA provides an amount of caffeine equivalent to one half cup of coffee per twelve-ounce serving.

Yerba mate is cultivated in South America, where a yerba mate infusion is as ubiquitous as a cup of coffee in the United States. Many prefer the gentle stimulating effects of yerba mate to those of coffee. In addition, yerba mate is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The yerba mate ritual has been an integral part of South American culture for hundreds of years, bringing family and friends together.

MateVeza was founded in 2006 by homebrewer Jim Woods after he fortuitously followed a sip of freshly brewed yerba mate with a hoppy pale ale in his San Francisco apartment. Sparks flew, as the contrasting flavors of yerba mate, hops and malt tantalized his taste buds. Woods developed a yerba mate ale recipe and brought MateVeza to market in November of 2006, making it the first beer brewed with yerba mate in the world. Woods’ use of yerba mate leaves in the brewing process earned him “four stars for originality” from the late great beer writer, William Brand. Draft Magazine called MateVeza one of the “Top 25 Beers of 2007″ and “proof that beer can go well beyond its four main ingredients.”

MateVeza Yerba Mate Gold and Yerba Mate IPA are now available throughout California, Oregon, and Washington in twenty-two-ounce bottles with twelve-ounce bottles arriving this summer. Visit  http://www.mateveza.com  for details on availability.

Review on Leafygreen.info

August 10th, 2008

MateVeza review on leafygreen.info:

The fusion of Organic Yerba Mate and Cerveza results in a very drinkable pale ale called MateVeza. The naturally caffeinated pale ale is a unique style in the craft beer market. First off, this beer is caffeinated because Yerba Mate provides natural energy from the plant. I’m not sure of the actual brewing process but the beer tastes slightly like Mate but definitely resembles a straight-forward pale ale.

Mate is normally woodsy and heavy unlike most teas. The mellow hops and citrus flavor counter balance the ale nicely.

MateVeza is a very drinkable Pale Ale so if you’re on the west coast, go ahead and buy some of it in the local stores, if you’re anywhere else, check out the site for information and a locator.
